Ma Ying-jeou is a highly revered figure in modern Chinese politics and leadership. His notable roles include serving as Mayor of Taipei from 1998 to 2006 and Minister of Justice of the Republic of China from 1993 to 2006. Ultimately, he served as the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) between 2008 and 2016.
Background & Education
He was born in Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon (previously British Hong Kong). However, he was raised in Taipei and earned his first degree in law from the National Taiwan University.
The politician holds a “master of laws degree” from New York University and a “doctor of juridical science degree” from Harvard University.
Early Political Career
In the 1980s, he worked as the English interpreter under President Chiang Ching-Kuo. He was elected as the chair of the “Research, Development and Evaluation Commission” at age 38, becoming the ROC’s youngest member of cabinet.
He then served as the ROC’s Justice Minister between 1993 and 1996.
Presidency
He won the 2012 and 2008 presidential elections by earning 51.6% and 58.45%. His tenure saw cordial relations with “Mainland China.” He oversaw the signing of the “Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA),” – a free-trade agreement with China in 2010. Further, in 2010 he grew the Taiwan economy by 10%.
