About Maria Echaveste
Between 1993 and 1997, Maria Echaveste worked at the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division as its administrator. She moved to the White House in 1997 and headed the Public Liaison office. The following year, under the administration of Bill Clinton, she served as the President’s assistant and also as the Deputy Chief of Staff.
In 2001, she co-established a consulting firm known as the Nueva Vista Group. She’s also known for her time at the University of California, Berkeley where she worked as a lecturer.
Family
She was raised by her Mexican parents alongside six other children. She’s known to be the wife of Christopher Edley Jr.
Education
In 1976, she graduated from Stanford University. Echaveste later attended the School of Law of the University of California, Berkeley.
Recognitions
The Wage and Hour Division was honored with the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation’s “American Government Award” under her leadership.
Trivia
Echaveste was nominated for an ambassadorial position under President Barack Obama.
She has also appeared on PBS’ "To the Contrary" show.
