About Mariano Moreno
Mariano Moreno was a brilliant and preeminent Argentine political figure. He is widely known for his instrumental role in gaining independence for Argentina and leading the movement which formed the “Primera Junta” – Argentina’s first national government.
Early Life & Education
He was educated at the Colegio Grande de San Carlos and the University of Chuquisaca. Moreno read law and was a great intellectual. He also studied the works of many great European philosophers who believed in “Enlightenment.” He spoke English, French, and Spanish. He later held various positions in the Spanish Colonial Bureaucracy.
Political Career Highlights
In 1809, he became one of the most outspoken Argentine political figures with his famous tract “Representación de Los hacendados.” Moreno’s consistent arguments against the restrictive nature of the Spanish Navigation Acts on the trade market for Argentines made the Viceroy induce many concessions. As a result, in May 1810, Argentina’s first national government, “Primera Junta,” was formed. He subsequently became the secretary and later the head of the Junta. He notably exiled the Viceroy and took many aggressive actions which expanded the revolution.
Moreno founded the “La Gaceta de Bueno Aires” newspaper and the National Library.
His opposition eventually forced him to resign in late 1810.
Cause of Death
