About Martha Raye
American actress Martha Raye was famous for her comedic acting in films and television shows. She also performed several film soundtracks. She made her professional acting debut in 1934 on Broadway through the musical, “Calling All Stars”. Two years later, she played her first screen role as Emma Mazda in the film, “Rhythm on Stage”.
She also became one of the earliest television stars through her variety show, “The Martha Raye Show” which ran from 1954 to 1956. Popular films she appeared in include “Waikiki Wedding” and “Billy Rose’s Jumbo”.
Family Life
She was born Marge Reed to an American mother, Maybelle Hazel and an Irish immigrant father Peter F. Reed Jr. She was married seven times and had one child with Nick Condos, her fourth husband. Make-up artist Bud Westmore and songwriter/composer David Rose were amongst her ex-husbands.
Achievements
She was the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1969.
Death
She died on October 19, 1994 from pneumonia. She was survived by her daughter, Melody and her seventh husband, Mark Harris.
