About Martti Ahtisaari
The 2008 Nobel Peace Prize was given to Martti Ahtisaari, a former president of Finland, for his outstanding efforts to end international hostilities during a period of more than three decades that spanned numerous continents. He had a significant role in Namibia's 1989–1990 independence, the 1999 and 2005–2007 Kosovo arbitrations, and the 2005 peace agreement that ended the protracted violence in Indonesia's Aceh province.
Early Life
Originally from Finland, Viipuri (now Vyborg, Russia). He attended high school at Kuopion Lyseo. He moved to Oulu in 1952 along with his family. In 1959, he graduated from the University of Oulu.
He wed Eeva Irmeli Hyvärinen in 1968. Marko Ahtisaari is the couple's lone child. His diagnosis of advanced Alzheimer's disease was made public in 2021.
Career
He worked in Pakistan on a project for the Swedish Agency for International Development in the early 1960s. He came back to Finland in 1965 and began working for the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Eight years later, he was named ambassador to Tanzania. He developed his diplomatic abilities while serving as Namibia's UN commissioner (1977–1981).
He successfully ran for and won the Finnish presidency in 1994 and contributed to the resolution of the Kosovo crisis. He formed the Crisis Management Initiative after leaving office and was chosen for a number of diplomatic positions, including serving as an arms inspector in Northern Ireland.
Awards
He won the J. William Fulbright Award for International Understanding in 2000 and the Félix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize from UNESCO in 2008.
