About Mary Bruce, Countess of Elgin
Mary Hamilton Nisbet was the name given to her at birth before she married British Diplomat Thomas Bruce who was the 7th Earl of Elgin. At the time, he was the Ambassador Extraordinaire to the Ottoman Empire. Mary became the Countess of Elgin.
Her mother was the granddaughter of the second Duke of Rutland named John Manners. Her father joined parliament and they moved to London. At the time, she was a teenager.
Marriage
When she met Thomas Bruce, he had just become the ambassador. They were related distantly and both their families agreed to them getting married. They got married in March of 1799. When they decided to travel to Constantinople from Portsmouth, Mary was already pregnant.
They moved to the old French Embassy when they arrived and even though it was a difficult time because English people were not really liked there, she hosted parties and made the place home as much as she could.
She became the first woman to attend a political Ottoman ceremony on the permission of the Grand Vizier even though she had to dress like a man and was five months pregnant. Together, she and her husband had five children.
