Early Life
He was born in Asmara, Eritrea, but emigrated with his family to the U.S as refugees. He naturalised in 1998 and studied at UCLA.
Career Highlights
In 2009, he won the U.S.A. Running Circuit rankings and scored his first victory in the event in 2002. In the same year, he won the ING N.Y.C. Marathon. He charmed the nation with his phenomenal Boston Marathon win in 2014. The following year, he scored a couple of top-five finishes during the San Diego Half Marathon and San Jose Half Marathon.
Accolades
In 2009, he received an AL Rolaids Relief Man Award. He is also a four-time NCAA champion who got inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
Trivia
In 2008, he donated $500,000 to the Stony Brook athletics department.
