About Milton Obote
The Ugandan political leader is widely known for his tenacity in helping the Eastern African country gain independence from the British Empire in 1962. He then served as the prime minister of Uganda from 1962 to 1966 and became Uganda's second president from 1966 to 1971; and seventh president from 1980 to 1985.
Early Life
Obote was the third child of nine children of a tribal chief in Uganda. He enrolled in the Protestant Missionary School in 1940 and later attended the Gulu Secondary School, and he continued at Busoga College and finally completed his education at Makerere University.
Milton Obote was very interested in politics and joined the Uganda National Congress in 1956, where he was elected to join the colonial Legislative council in 1957.
Career
1960 saw Obote establish the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), which was essential in securing Uganda's independence in 1962. The people revered his leadership skills, and he became the prime minister under President King Mutesa II. Obote, however, overthrew him in 1964 and became the president from 1966 to 1971. After incurring the displeasure of some army officers, led by Idi Amin, Obote was overthrown by Amin. The deposed president was then forced into exile while Amin unleashed what could only be described as a reign of terror for 8 years.
In 1972, Obote, with the help of allies from Tanzania, tried to invade Uganda in order to remove military dictator Amin from power. The invasion was a monumental failure, and Obote had to live in exile in Dar es Salaam.
With Amin removed from power in 1980 kind courtesy of Tanzanian forces, Obote returned to Uganda and led his party to victory at the elections in 1980.
His second spell as president of Uganda lasted from 1980 to 1985, when he was once again overthrown by senior military officers. The deposed leader first settled in Kenya before relocating to Zambia.
Personal Life
Obote married Miria Obote in 1963. He died of kidney failure in 2005 in South Africa. He was survived by his widow and 5 children. His widow, Miria Obote, was elected president of the UPC party.
