About Mohammad Hatta
Mohammad Hatta was one of the key people who fought for the independence of Indonesia. He began his journey in the political circles in 1920 when he became a member of the Indische Vereeniging movement in the Netherlands. Between 1922 and 1925, he served as the treasurer of the group.
He returned to his native country in 1932 and joined the political party known as the Indonesian National Education. Later that year, he was announced as the party’s national chairman. In 1945, during the Sukarno-led administration, he was appointed as the country’s Vice President, becoming the first person to occupy that position. He also served as Indonesia’s Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Foreign Minister.
Family
He was the grandson of Sheikh Abdurrahman, and the son of Haji Mohammad Djamil. He spent most of his childhood with his mother and six sisters. His three children with Rahmi Rachim include renowned anthropologist Meutia Farida Hatta.
Education
Between 1913 and 1916, he studied at Europeesche Lagere School. Hatta later moved to Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs. In the Netherlands, he schooled at the Netherlands School of Commerce (now known as Erasmus University Rotterdam).
Trivia
The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was named after him.
