About Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri
Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri is famously known as a Pakistani Islamic Scholar. He is also a politician and the founder of Pakistan Awami Tehreek and Minhaj-ul-Quran International. He lectured at the University of Punjab as a Professor of international and constitutional law.
Early life & Education
Jhang district, Pakistan, is his birthplace. As a result, Qadri was privileged to be educated in Islamic teachings by Pakistani and international scholars at a very young age.
He holds a doctorate in Islamic law, a master’s in Islamic studies, and a first-class degree from the University of Punjab.
Political career
In 1989, he founded the Pakistan Awami Tehreek political party. Qadri represented the party at the Pakistan general elections in 1990 and won to become a Nation Assembly Member. He served as an Assembly member from 1990 until 2004, when he resigned. Qadri’s resignation was in protest of President Pervez Musharaf’s counter-terrorism policies, which Qadri deemed highly dictatorial.
Qadri’s Long March
In 2013, Qadri led a large crowd for a march in front of the Pakistani parliament. He addressed the gathering by stating that the parliament was a group of thieves and lawbreakers. He insisted on changes in the electoral system and a more transparent government.
The Government later signed the “Islamabad Long March Declaration” agreement and promised to deliver all of Qadri’s demands.
