Early Years
He studied at Phillips Exeter Academy and later at Harvard College where he majored in English. Before hatching his dreams of a literacy career, he served in the U.S. Navy and as a public relations officer in the North Atlantic convoy duty.
Literary Career
He started his writing career as a freelance journalist for such magazines as Newsweek. After three-and-a-half decades of freelance writing and part-time painting, he ventured into novels, short stories and reviews. He earned critical applause for authoring the biography of the famous American actor, Humphrey Bogart. Notable among his novels are “The Off-Islanders,” “The Wake of the Icarus,” “Sweet Anarchy” and “Speakeasy.”
Family
After his graduation from the University, he married Marjorie Bradford with whom he had two sons.
Trivia
In 1961, his book “Sail a Crooked Ship,” was made into a feature film which starred Robert Wagner and Dolores Hart.
