Legendary Israeli Grammy award-nominated actress and singer Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza-Ashkenazi, who is famous by the stage name Ofra Haza, rose to prominence in the Western world, earning the moniker "Madonna of the East."
She was a significant cultural figure in Israel, and instrumental in commercializing Mizrahi culture. She gained a worldwide following with her unique combination of pop and traditional Yemeni music.
She had her breakthrough success in 1979 with the comedy musical film “Shlagger”. She became an international icon after finishing second in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1983.
