About Ovid
Ovid, born Publius Ovidius Naso, was a poet from the era of the reign of Rome’s first Empire, Augustus. Upon his father’s insistence, he studied rhetoric with plans to pursue a career in law. He gave up on law and decided to be a poet instead.
He reportedly performed his first recitation at eighteen years old. He was very popular even when he was alive, and is known best for his works “Metamorphoses", “Fasti” and “Ars Amatoria”.
Family Life
He was born into gens Ovidia, an affluent family in ancient Rome. His brother, whom he studied rhetoric with, died at 20 years old and it contributed to his decision to abandon law, against his father’s disapproval. He was married thrice.
Exile
Emperor Augustus independently banished him in AD 8, to Tomis. Although he hinted at what could have caused his exile through his writings, he never explicitly mentioned it. This has led many historians to make wild guesses.
Death
He died in exile in 17/18 AD.
