Background
Growing up in Belfast, Barnes began boxing at the age of eleven. He joined the Holy Family Boxing Club in Belfast at the age of 16 and soon became an amateur boxer.
Accolades
Barnes won the silver medal in the 2008 European Union Amateur Championships in Poland and also qualified for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In Beijing, he was defeated by Chinese boxer Shiming Zou and had to settle for the bronze medal. This Irish boxer won gold in both the European Amateur Boxing Championships and Commonwealth Games in 2010. It was deja vu all over again in the 2012 London Summer Olympics, where he was defeated by Shiming Zou again in the semi-finals. Barnes was knocked out in the round of 16 at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and finally hung up his gloves in 2019.
