Percival Lowell was a famous astronomer who is known to have studied the canals of Mars and played an important role in the finding of Pluto.
Early Life and Education
The past astronomer was born in Boston, Massachusetts into a wealthy family. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1876.
His Career
Lowell worked in his family business after college before he delved deep into astronomy. He travelled to the Far East in 1882 after a teaching job in Japan inspired him. During his time in the Far East, he performed the duties of a counselor and secretary to the Korean Special Mission to the United States. The scientist dedicated his time to study Mars after he was inspired by Giovanni Schiaparelli’s discovery of “Canals” on Mars.
His Legacy
He established the program and setting which made the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh possible.
His published books include; ”An Unexplored Corner of Japan”(1891), “The Land of the Morning Calm”(1886), ”The Soul of the Far East”(1888).
His Death
He died of a stroke in 1916.
