As a player Phil Garner spent over a decade in Major League Baseball. He joined the league in 1973 as a signee of the Oakland Athletics. After four years, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates where he would win the World Series in 1979. He also starred for teams like the San Francisco Giants, and the Houston Astros before drawing the curtains down on his playing career after the 1988 season.
As a Manager
Garner went into management after ending his playing career. In 1992, he was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers. He later moved to the Detroit Tigers, before joining the Houston Astros in 2004. The following year, he led the Astros to the World Series final, but lost to the Chicago White Sox.
