About Pope Leo XIII
Born Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Pecci, Pope Leo XIII served as the chief leader of the Catholic Church between February 1878 and 1903, when he passed away. He is remembered for making efforts to align the beliefs of the Catholic Church with modern thinking.
He authored “Rerum Novarum”, an encyclical in the form of an open letter (distributed to leaders of the Catholic Church) which sought to highlight workers’ rights to better working conditions and salaries.
Personal Life
He was born to Anna Prosperi Buzzi and Count Ludovico Pecci. He grew up with six brothers. When he became the pope, he appointed his theologian elder brother, Giuseppe, as a cardinal. He was 26 years old when he earned doctorates in theology, civil law and Canon Law. He became an ordained priest in December 1837.
Papacy
Due to his intellectual background, his papacy was characterized by him encouraging the co-existence of religion and science. He ranks behind John Paul and Pius IX as the longest-serving confirmed popes.
Death
He died on July 20, 1903, making him the first pope to die in the 20th century. He was 93.
