About Rafael Caldera
Rafael Caldera was a popular Venezuelan civilian president in the mid-20th century who ruled for a total of ten years in two terms with twenty years between the two terms.
Education
By age 15, Rafael had completed San Ignacio de Loyola High School and proceeded to read law at the Central University of Venezuela and then a PhD in Political Science in 1939.
Early Political Positions
President Conteras got interested in a newspaper article on labor issues submitted by Caldera. He (Conteras) appointed Caldera Deputy Director of the National Labor Office, where Caldera assisted in drafting the country’s first labor Laws.
Writings
Caldera had authored many socio-political books from age nineteen which includes “Andres Bello” and “Moldes Para la Fragua”.
Political Career
In 1941, Caldera was elected to the Venezuelan Chamber of Deputies through his National Action Party at age 25.
In a series of appointments to top civil positions, he competed and lost the 1947 presidential elections to AD’s Romulo Gallegos, who was overthrown by Perez Jimenez in the 1948 coup d’état.
Caldera was haunted, imprisoned and exiled during Perez’s rule, but returned in 1958 after Perez was removed by a counter coup.
He lost two more presidential elections in 1958 and 1963, then finally won in 1968. He had his first term from 1969 to 1974. In 1983, the constitution permitted Caldera to compete again; he won the 1993 elections from his National Convergence party and ruled from 1994 to 1999.
Achievements and Honors
Caldera embarked on notable policies including defending the 1961 Constitution and improved social infrastructure such as water dams, Caracas-Cua railroad and Merida-El Vigia highway.
He earned tens of honors from top institutions across the world.
Personal Life and Death
He married Alicia Pietri Montemayor in 1941. The couple had six children. After a number of years battling Parkinson’s disease, the former Venezuelan leader died in 2009, aged 93.
