About Rakesh Sharma
Rakesh Sharma became a member of the Indian Air Force in 1970. By the end of 1984, he had risen to the squadron leader rank. That same year, he made history by becoming the first cosmonaut from India to make it to space. He was a member of the Soyuz T-11 led by Yury Malyshev.
In 1987, he joined the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as one of their chief test pilots. He brought his flying career to an end in 2001.
Personal Life
He has been married to a lady called Madhu. He has two children named Kapil and Krittika.
Education
Sharma was a student of St. George's Grammar School before he started his education at Nizam College in Hyderabad. He was later trained at the National Defence Academy.
Honors
After returning from space, he received the Hero of the Soviet Union award. He is also a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra award.
Trivia
Before retiring from the military, he was a wing commander.
