About Randy Shughart
Randy Shughart was sent to a North Carolina-based military installation known as Fort Bragg in 1986 as a member of the Delta Force. In 1993, he was included in the team that was deployed to Mogadishu in Somalia to restore peace in the city.
In the course of Operation Gothic Serpent, one of America’s Black Hawk aircraft named Super Six-Four was shot down. In order to save the affected officers, Shughart alongside Gary Ivan Gordon decided to provide cover at the site where the helicopter crashed.
The two battled their way through the Somali Army before reaching the site. They were able to rescue some members in the downed aircraft before they were outnumbered and killed.
Personal Life
His dad, Herbert Shughart, was also a member of the U.S. Air Force.
Education
After completing his education at Big Spring High School he joined the U.S. Army. He was further trained at Airborne School, and the Ranger School.
Honors
Due to his selfless service during the Mogadishu War, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1994. He also received the Purple Heart award.
Facts
American actor and martial artist Johnny Strong played his character in the movie titled “Black Hawk Down” which was released in 2001.
A United States Navy ship was named after him in 1997.
