About Roy Williams
Roy Williams is one of the most celebrated names in the history of college basketball. The Basketball Hall of Fame inductee is best known for his time with the University of North Carolina’s basketball team known as the North Carolina Tar Heels.
He started his coaching career in 1973 when he was named as the head coach of Charles D. Owen High School’s basketball team. After five years, he joined the University of North Carolina where he worked as Dean Smith’s assistant. Before leaving his post in 1988, he helped the team to win the NCAA national title.
He was appointed the head coach of Kansas Jayhawks, the basketball team of the University of Kansas in 1988. He served in that position for fifteen seasons before moving to the North Carolina Tar Heels. He spent 18 years at North Carolina where he won three NCAA Division I titles. He retired from the game in 2021.
International Career
Williams has also worked with the United States’ men’s basketball team. He was a member of the team’s coaching staff at the 2004 edition of the Olympic Games. The U.S. won bronze at the event. A year before that, he helped the team to win gold at the FIBA Americas Championship.
Family
He has two children with Wanda, and their names are Kimberly and Scott.
Education
After T. C. Roberson High School, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina and was a member of the school’s basketball team.
Achievements
In 2006, he was selected into the famous College Basketball Hall of Fame. That same year, he won his second Henry Iba Award. His other laurels include the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award, and the Big Eight Coach of the Year. In 2019, he was named the USA Today National Coach of the Year.
