About Rui Costa
Celebrated for his technical and goal scoring prowess, Portuguese soccer star Rui Costa is widely considered as one of the country’s most talented players of his generation. He became a national hero in 1991 when he scored the final penalty to help Portugal win the World Youth Championship.
He was promoted to the senior side in 1993 and played in many international tournaments including the FIFA World Cup, and the UEFA Euro where he helped his country to reach the final in 2004.
Career highlights
Costa started playing soccer at the age of five years and later joined the youth side of Benfica. He spent his first professional year on loan at A.D. Fafe before making his Benfica debut in 1991. His fine performance drew interest from a number of top clubs across Europe including Fiorentina who signed him in 1994.
The Portuguese midfielder became a household name after joining AC Milan in 2001. With the team, he won the UEFA Champions League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia.
Later career
After his retirement, Costa has served in other executive positions at his former club, Benfica. In 2008, he was named the sporting director of the club. During his tenure, the club recorded many successes including the Primeira Liga in 2010.
Achievements
He has won many individual awards. He has been made the Officer of the Order of Prince Henry, and a member of the AC Milan Hall of Fame.
