About Ruth Bancroft Law
For several years, Law broke both stereotypical rules and flying records and courted death in her exciting but risky career as an aviator. Affectionately dubbed “Queen of the Air,” she inspired contemporaries when she flew from Chicago to NYC in a day, a feat none had achieved at the time.
Early Life
Ruth Bancroft Law came from a family of aviators. Even as a child, she was known to be very competitive. She made her first flight a month after graduating from the Burgess Flying School in 1912.
Career Highlights
She set three records in 1916 while flying from Chicago to New York and was privileged to convey the first official air mail to the Philippine Islands three years later. Though she was the first woman authorized to wear a military uniform, she was not allowed to engage in flight combat. Following World War I, she started the Ruth Law’s Flying Circus during which a three-plane troupe participated in races against cars. She was a strong advocate for women to pilot military aircraft but was unsuccessful. She retired in 1922.
Trivia
She purchased her first aircraft from Orville Wright in 1912.
