About Selim II
Selim II gained global fame as the ruler of the then-powerful Ottoman Empire. He ascended the throne in 1566 and became the eleventh person to occupy that position.
He would best be remembered for his part in ending the infamous Austrian-Turkish War after signing the Treaty of Adrianople in 1568. This agreement ensured peace between the Ottoman and the Holy Roman empires.
Family
His father, Suleiman the Magnificent, was the longest-serving Sultan of the Empire. He spent his childhood with his mother Hurrem Sultan, alongside his siblings Bayezid, Mehmed, and Mustafa, his step-brother.
He was married to Nurbanu Sultan with whom he had Murad III who would later succeed him as the Sultan.Selim’s other children wereGevherhan Sultan, Fatma Sultan, and Şehzade Osman.
Trivia
Due to his love for drinks, he was nicknamed “Selim the Drunk”.
