His family was Jewish and he attended University of Virginia where he studied painting and sculpture.
Career
After school, he decided to try his hands in the television scene so he got a job at Walt Disney Studios where he worked as an apprentice for makeup. Stan Winston Studio was the company he started in 1972. In that same year, he did makeup work for the show “Gargoyles” and it was so impressive that he started getting recognized. In 1974, he worked on “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and won an Emmy Award for it. Even though he had started gaining recognition, his work in “The Thing” made him more popular.
Achievements
His work on “Gargoyles” earned him an Emmy Award. In 1982, the American comedy “Heartbeeps” which he worked on got him nominated for the Oscars.
Death
He was diagnosed with plasma cell myeloma and had to deal with it for several years before passing on in June 2008.
Legacy
His family started a school named Stan Winston School of Character Arts. The school was established to help new creatives.
