About Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani
When Hamad bin Khalifa vacated the throne in 2013, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was named as the Emir of Qatar. A celebrated leader of the kingdom, Tamim has been praised for his efforts in putting Qatar on the international map. It was under his leadership that the country had the opportunity to host one of the world’s most significant sporting events, the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
His role in the development of sports
Tamim identified sports as a tool for raising the profile of the country. Aside from the FIFA World Cup, the charismatic leader has also invested in other sporting areas. He founded the Oryx Qatar Sports Investments in 2005. The organization is best known as the owners of French club Paris Saint-Germain F.C.
In addition to that, Sheikh Tamim led his country to win the right to host the FINA Swimming World Championships in 2014. He has also served as the country’s Olympic Committee and has been associated with the International Olympic Committee.
Family
He succeeded his father Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. He’s also the son of Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned. Sheikh Jassim, his senior brother, decided not to ascend the throne as the Emir of Qatar.
He married Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad Al Thani, his first wife in 2005. He later tied the knot with Sheikha Al-Anoud bint Mana Al Hajri then he later married Sheikha Noora bint Hathal Al Dosari, his third wife. By the end of 2020, the Emir had thirteen children from his three marriages.
Education
He attended Harrow School and Sherborne School in the United Kingdom. In 1998, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Decorations
His numerous honors include Qatar’s Grand Master of the Order of Merit, Spain’s Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic and the Grand Officer of the Order of the Legion of Honour from the French government.
