About Theodor Fontane
The Prussian novelist Theodor Fontane was known for his remarkable works which included “Frau Jenny Treibel” (1892), Effi Briest (1895) and Der Stechlin (1898).
Personal life
He was the son of Louis Henry and Emilie Fontane. He began a marital relationship with Emilie Rouanet-Kummer in 1850 and he had five children with her.
Career Highlight
The German novelist published his first book “Geschwisterliebe” in 1839. Fontane started to work as a journalist in 1848, serving as the writer at Zentralstelle fur Presseangelegenheitan. As he worked at the intelligence agency, he focused on British affairs and due to that, he was made a reporter of the agency in London.
He resigned as the writer for the agency and became a drama critic for the Berlin newspaper, Vossische Zeitung. Interestingly, Fontane began to fully work on his novels by the age of 57 and he wrote the above- mentioned novels of which he is remembered for. To add up, he wrote the following poems: “Aber es bleibt auf dem alten Fleck”, “Gorm Grymme”, “Wo Bismarck Liegen Soll”, and “Märkische Reime”.
Honor
The German sculptors Max Klein and Fritz Schaper designed a statue of Theodor Fontane. The work can be found at Grober Tiergarten in Berlin.
