About Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk, theologian, and poet. He was also known as a mystic, comparative religion scholar and social activist. Having lived at the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani monastery from 1941 onwards, he was ordained as a priest in 1949 and thence became Father Louis.
He was known best for two things: his writings and his interest in interfaith dialogue. Among his over 50 published books on spirituality, pacifism and social justice was the popular “The Seven Storey Mountain”, his autobiography.
