About Tony Smith
Tony Smith, born Anthony Peter Smith was an American sculptor, architect, painter and art theorist. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of the American Minimalism art movement. He started out as an architectural designer, a career that lasted from 1940 to 1960, during which he worked on private homes. His interest in sculpture was nurtured in the early 1960s while recuperating from a car accident. His best-known sculptures include “Light Up”, “The Fourth Sign”, “Smug” and “Cigarette”.
Family Life
He was married to actress and opera singer Jane Lawrence. The couple had three daughters, one of whom, Beatrice Smith, became an underground actress. His other two daughters, Chiara and Seton followed in their father’s footsteps and became artists.
Death
He died on December 26, 1980 from a heart attack.
