Vangelis is the professional name of Greek composer and musician Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou. He rose to international fame for his composition of scores for films such as “Chariots of Fire”, “Alexander” and “Blade Runner”. He started out as a performer in bands in the 1960s. His music composition genres include electronic, jazz, progressive and orchestral.
He grew up in Athens, Greece. He was born to an amateur sprinter called Odysseus. He has a brother called Nikos. He has been very private about his personal life, in spite of his fame. It is believed, however, that he has been married twice and has no children.
He received an Oscar for “Best Original Score” for his “Chariots of Fire” soundtrack. He was honored with NASA’s Public Service Medal and France’s “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters”.
