About Vilfredo Pareto
Vilfredo Pareto, originally named Wilfried Fritz Pareto, was a famous Italian economist, sociologist and civil engineer between the mid-1800s and early 1920s. He introduced “elite” interactions in economic and social analysis, and the famous “Pareto principle” was named in his honor.
Background & Education
He was of French and Italian descent and was a native of Paris, France. However, he was raised in Italy and attended the “Istituto Tecnico Leardi”. In 1869, he obtained an engineering doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Turin.
Career Highlights
His first career job was as a civil engineer in one of the earliest Italian state-owned railway companies. However, in 1886, he was appointed as a management and economics lecturer at the University of Florence. He lectured at Florence for three years and quit his job in 1889. In 1893, he took the job as the chairman of political economy at the University of Lausanne.
Major Works
Pareto’s most notable works include “Cours d’économie politique”, “Manuale di economia politica” and “Trattato di sociologia generale”.
His concepts of welfare economics, society’s social system and proof of wealth and distribution of incomes were vital in the development of sociology in America.
Death
He died at age 75 on August 19, 1923, in Céligny, Switzerland.
