About Walter Winchell
Winchell was an American journalist who thrived as a major critic and columnist for New York tabloids. The journalist became famous as the first significant commentator to attack Adolf Hitler and American pro-fascist organizations.
Early Life
Winchell spent most of his early life in New York. His parents, Jacob and Jennie Winchell, were Russian immigrants of Jewish descent. Winchell, who was not very interested in school, dropped out and became a tap dancer. A little while after, he joined the U.S. Navy in World War I and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander.
Journalism Career
Winchell's life turned when he realized he could use his talent gathering information and trading gossip for a commercial purpose. He then joined the Vaudeville News in 1920, worked for Evening Graphic in 1924, and then the New York Mirror in 1924. Although his stories were entertaining, Winchell’s ability to uncover hard news and embarrassing stories of famous people made it quite hard to like him. He attacked the sympathizers of Nazism during World War II.

He played a few roles on television. He appeared in films such as “Wake Up and Live”, “A Face in the Crowd”, and “Beau James”. From 1959 to 1963, he was involved with “The Untouchables”, a crime drama that aired on ABC Television Network.
Personal Life
Winchell married Rita Greene in 1919 but divorced in 1928. With his partner, Elizabeth June Magee, he had three children.
Death
He died in 1972, aged 74.
