William, Joseph Brennan Junior was a renowned American-based Judge who practiced and served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The judge, who as of 2022 is the seventh longest-serving Supreme Court Justice, died in July 1997.
Education and Background
The New Jersey-born lawyer was the son of William and Agnes Brennan. After graduating from Barringer High School, he attended the University of Pennsylvania and furthered his education at Harvard School of Law.
Career Highlights
He entered private practice right after his Harvard education, where he practiced labor law at the firm called Pitney Hardin. He was then commissioned into the army as a major in 1942. After his service, William was appointed to the Supreme Court of New Jersey in 1951, where he served till 1956.
In 1956, then-US president Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated Brennan to the Supreme Court. Brennan, whose nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate, served on the bench of the highest court in the United States from 1956 to 1990. Upon his retirement, his seat was filled by David Hackett Souter, who was nominated by U.S. President George H. W. Bush and later confirmed by the Senate.
While a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, he was most known for his progressive stance, especially on issues related to gay rights, women’s reproductive rights, and his strong opposition to the death penalty.
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who worked with Brennan on the bench, described Brennan as one of the most influential American jurists of the 20th century.
Personal life and Death
William married his high school sweetheart Marjorie Leonard in 1927, but unfortunately, she died in 1983. William then married Mary Fowler in 1983.
The supreme court judge died on July 4th, 1997, and was survived by 3 children.
Awards and Honours
He received the U.S Senator John Heinz Award in 1987.
Brennan was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993 by then-U.S. president Bill Clinton.
He was posthumously inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2010.
