About Władysław Gomułka
Wladyslaw Gomulka was a key figure in Polish politics for over four decades and one of the most powerful East European Communist Party leaders. He claimed for Poland the right to define its own economic and political growth model as the architect of the 'Polish path to socialism.' Still, he was nonetheless dedicated to Poland's participation in the Soviet bloc.
Early Years
Gomulka came from a poor background and received a basic education at the International Lenin School. The politician went through years of self-education and found himself nurturing an interest in politics at a young age.
Career
Gomulka's career started quite shaky. He formed an allegiance with radical youth organizations in 1922 and joined the Independent Peasant Party in 1925. His activism over the years led him to join other political factions such as the Communist Party of Poland from 1926 to 1938, the Polish United Workers' Party from 1949 to 1951, and the Polish United Workers' Party from 1956 to 1970.
He rose to the office of the First Secretary of the Polish Workers' Party from 1943 to 1948. He then became First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party from 1956 to 1970.
Personal Life and Death
The politician married Liwa (Zofia) née Szoken from 1902 to 1986. He died in 1982 from lung cancer and was survived by a child.
Awards
Gomulka was decorated with the Medal "For Warsaw 1939-1945."
