About Yongle Emperor
Zhu Di, famously known as the Yongle Emperor, ruled the Chinese “Ming dynasty” between 1402 and 1424. In addition, he was the 3rd Ming dynasty Emperor and he relocated the imperial capital from Nanjing to large Beijing, building it with the “Forbidden City”.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. He was the 4th son of Zhu Yuanzhang (Hongwu Emperor and founder of China’s “Ming dynasty”).
In May 1370, at age 10, he was enfeoffed and designated as the “Prince of Yan”.
Rise to Emperor
He was a strong leader and opposed the “Mongols”. After surviving the early attacks and threats on his birthright and princedom, he traveled south to Nanjing to commence the Jingnan war against the mighty Jianwen Emperor. In 1402, he defeated his nephew Zhu Yunwen, occupied Nanjing (the imperial capital), he was declared Emperor and given the name “Yongle”, which meant “perpetual delight”.
Major Achievements as Emperor
He reopened and restored the Grand Canal and oversaw the building of the Forbidden City between 1406 and 1420. He was also in charge of Nanjing's “Porcelain Tower” widely recognized as a world wonder until “Taiping rebels” destroyed it in 1856.
Death
He died aged 64 on 12 August 1424, after battling several minor strokes for months.
