This Nobel Laureate, sculptor and painter is a bundle of talent. Despite years of torture and imprisonment from an oppressive government, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel continues to defend the rights of all to live freely and in peace.
Early Life
Born in Buenos Aires, this artist attended the National University of La Plata, where he studied arts. Esquivel left his career as a professor of architecture to promote the liberation of the poor in 1974 during the cruel years of former Argentine military dictator, General Jorge Videla.
Human Rights Advocate
Esquivel was arrested several times in Brazil, Ecuador, and eventually Argentina for sending records of human right abuses in Latin America to the United Nations. While enduring torture and detention for 14 months, he received several awards including, the Pope John XXIII Peace Memorial.
In 1980, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign for human rights. He donated the prize money to charity.
This Argentina-born activist has continued to voice his opinions about world issues although some may be deemed controversial like his support for the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro in 2017.
Art Work
Some of his notable artworks are “Monument to Refugees”, in Switzerland; a bronze image of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Square, in Barcelona; and the Latin American Peoples Mural in the Cathedral of Riobamba, Ecuador. The latter was made as a tribute to indigenous people in Latin America
Personal Life
Esquivel tied the knot with composer Amanda Pérez in 1956 and they have three children together.
