About Aharon Appelfeld
Famous Israeli author and Holocaust survivor Aharon Appelfeld wrote over 20 novels as well as anthologies of poetry, essays, and short tales. Although his works in English translation are mostly about the Holocaust, his writings cover a broader spectrum of topics.
Early Life
His mother was killed when the Romanian Army retook his hometown in 1941. The tragic incident happened when he was only nine years old. Later, he attended Hebrew University to study philosophy and worked as a professor of Hebrew literature.
Writing
His works of fiction include “Badenheim, ir nofesh” (1979; "Badenheim 1939"), and “Ha-Ketonet veha-pasim” (1983; "Tzili: The Story of a Life").
His books describe how other outcasts in Europe, such as accused witches, prostitutes, gypsies, criminals, helped immigrants particularly children, in their attempts to flee violence that was authorized by the government.
Awards
He won numerous honors, including the 1983 Israel Prize for Literature.
