About Aimé Césaire
Aimé Césaire was a poet and politician known as the founder of the Martinican Progressive Party. He was voted into the French National Assembly in 1958 and remained until 1993. Within that period, he also served as the President of the Regional Council of Martinique.
As a poet
Césaire’s literary works earned him lots of admirers. He was a co-founder of the movement known as the Négritude, which was crucial in the development of Francophone literature. In 1939, he published arguably his most popular work, a poem book titled “Cahier d'un retour au pays natal”. Some of his well-known works were “Soleil cou-coupé” and “Corps perdu”.
Aside from his poems, the French writer was also known to be a playwright. He was famously known for his 1969 play “Une Tempête” which has been described as the French version of “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare.
Personal Life
Between 1937 and 1963, he was married to Suzanne Roussi. Their union produced a son.
Education
He studied at the École Normale Supérieure and then the University of Paris.
Recognitions
An airport at Martinique's city of Le Lamentin has been named after him.
Trivia
Together with renowned writers like Léon Damas and Léopold Sédar Senghor, he formed a literary review group known as “The Black Student (L'Étudiant noir)”.
He was also the founder of the Tropiques magazine.
