About Alberto Ascari
Born to an Italian race driver, Alberto Ascari had a distinguished career as he won the Formula One World Championship twice. This multifaceted driver was Ferrari’s first World Champion and the last Italian to date (as of 2021) to win the title.
Background
Ascari was born to Grand Prix motor racing star, Antonio Ascari in 1918. His father was killed while racing at the French Grand Prix in 1925. Despite this, Ascari was still interested in racing, but racing had to take a back seat during World War II. During the war, he went to work for the family business, supplying fuel to army depots.
Career
After the war, Ascari went on to sign with Maserati 4CLT. He was on top of his game, winning several races. In 1949, Enzo Ferrari, who was a good friend of Antonio, signed the young Ascari to his team. He went on to reward Enzo’s faith in him by winning his first championship title in 1952, making him Ferrari's sole Italian champion. After winning his second championship title in 1953, he moved on to race for Italian team Lancia.
Death
On May 22, 1955, while competing in Monte Carlo, Ascari crashed his car through the barriers and into the Mediterranean Sea. Luckily, he suffered only a broken nose. Unfortunately, four days later he wouldn't be so lucky, as he suffered another accident on May 26 and died at the age of 36. “Little Ascari” followed his father’s footsteps even in death. The deaths of those two racing drivers have gone down in the history of the sport as one of the most bizarre coincidences.
Trivia
Ascari always wore his lucky blue helmet in all races except the race on May 26th that killed him.
The F1 Champion was nicknamed “Little Ascari”, a reference to his father and racing driver Antonio Ascari.
