About Alexis Carrel
The French biologist and surgeon earned the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his works in suturing blood vessels which set the tone for future transplant surgeries. The first ever perversion pump that made organ transplantation possible could be traced to his ingenuity. His researches were often focused on experimental surgery and organ transplant.
Early Life & Education
1873 welcomed the birth of one of science greats in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, Rhône in France. He was educated in Jesuit schools, and by his teens, he was studying medicine at the University of Lyon in France.
Career and Notable Accomplishments
He started work as a scientist in Hull Laboratory in Chicago, Illinois. There, he met fellow scientist Charles Claude Guthrie. The two worked together extensively on vascular suture and blood and head transplants. These experiments would prove to be grounding breaking and change the world of science forever. In a mid-1930s experiment, he established the fact that organs could be kept in cold storage for long periods before transplanted during surgery.
In the late 1930s, the physician became the director of the Foundation for the Study of Human Problems (also known as the Alexis Carrel Foundation), instituted by the Vichy government in France. He held this position until his retirement at 65 years old.
Death
On November 5, 1944, Alexis Carrel died of a heart attack at the age of 71.
Personal Life
He was married to Anne-Marie Laure Gourlez de la Motte but fathered no child.
Honors
In 2002, during the 100th anniversary celebration of Charles Lindbergh's birth, the Medical University of South Carolina established the Lindbergh-Carrel Prize; an award to honor significant contributions towards organ preservation.
Various learned societies in countries such as Spain, U.S.A and Germany honored him by inviting him to be a member of their groups.
Trivia
In his 1939 book, “The Culture of Organs”, he explored the possible advances scientific researches would achieve if they were funded adequately.
His research into vascular suturing was motivated by the assassination of French president Sadi Carnot, whose death was as a result of ruptured blood vessels.
