About Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was a prominent photographer who served as one of the pioneers of photography, making it an acceptable form of art. His career spanned for more than 50 years, through which he was able to bring several European artists into the American limelight. With his incredible photography skills, he participated in several competitions and exhibitions where he won lots of accolades. Throughout his career, he produced over 2,500 mounted photographs.
Family Life
Stieglitz's father, Edward Stieglitz was an army lieutenant, while his mother was called Hedwig Werner. His siblings were Flora, Leopold, Agnes, Selma and renowned chemist, Julius Stieglitz. He married Emmeline Obermeyer in 1893, but divorced in 1924. He was in a long-time romantic relationship with photographer and writer, Dorothy Norman.
He was married to Georgia O'Keeffe from 1924 until his death in 1946. He had a daughter named Katherine Stieglitz.
Death
After a much celebrated career, he died in 1946 after suffering from a cerebral thrombosis.
Trivia
He was trained at the Charlier Institute in New York. He also studied at Real Gymnasium in Karlsruhe and graduated from Technische Hochschule in Berlin, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He purchased his first hand-held camera in 1882.
