About André Citroën
André Citroën is largely recognized for transforming the automotive industry in France.
Biography: Life & Career
Citroën was born to a Dutch father and a Polish mother. The family moved to Paris in 1873. Shortly after, he lost his father to suicide.
He attended lycee Louis le Grande, where he graduated with top honors and enrolled at the École Polytechnique Paris. However, his academic performance had taken a hit after his mother died. Citroën joined the army to work as an engineer.
During a visit to Poland, Citroën grew fascinated with wooden gears used to power cotton mills. He deduced that gears made with steel would improve the efficiency of machines and decided to turn it into a project. In 1904, he established his factory to manufacture double-helical gearwheels.
By 1919, he founded the automobile company, Citroën and by the 1930s, the company had grown to become one of the biggest car manufacturers. He passed away in 1935 of stomach cancer.
