About Antonio José de Sucre
Born and raised in Venezuela, Jose de Sucre became the second president of Bolivia and stayed in office from 1825 to 1828. He succeeded the famous South American independence fighter Simon Bolivar. He was also the president of Peru for a brief period in 1823.
Family
His family roots can be traced to Flanders, which is the Flemish-speaking northern portion of Belgium. He was introduced to Venezuela by Charles de Sucre y Franco Perez, who was the son of Charles Adrian de Sucre.
He married Mariana de Carcelen and they both had a girl called Teresa Sucre y Carcelen.
Political Career
He was a prominent politician during the early 1800s. Sucre participated in military battles such as the Battles of Pichincha, Battle of Tarqui and Battle of Tumusla.
On 23rd June 1823, he became the president of Peru but his tenure was a short one and he was succeeded by Jose Bernardo de Tagle.
Legacy
The Venezuelan Remote Sensing Satellite was named after him.
As a result of his influence in Latin America, some cities and places were named after him.
Assassination
He was assassinated on June 4, 1830. The perpetrators were Juan Gregorio Sarria and Colonel Apolinar Morillo.
