About Archibald Menzies
Famous Scottish botanist Archibald Menzies was the first European to reach the peak of Hawaiian volcano, Mauna Loa. He is also credited for introducing the Monkey Puzzle tree to England.
Biography
Menzies was born in Weem, Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later worked as a doctor’s assistant before joining the Royal Navy to serve as an assistant surgeon. In 1786, he joined the Prince of Wales crew as surgeon on a voyage to the northern Pacific. The crew visited North America, China, and Hawaii, where he collected several new plants.
Between 1791 and 1795, he accompanied other crews on various voyages worldwide, collecting different plant varieties and animals. Menzies also recorded his travels. After that time, he served in the navy in the West Indies and also got his MD from the University of Aberdeen.
He died in 1842.
