Early Life
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he enrolled in his freshman year at the Yale School of Art. While there, he enlisted in the US Navy and served in World War I.
Career Facts
In 1925, he worked as a freelance newspaper illustrator in New York. He made illustrations for more than 200 stories in the United Feature Syndicated newspapers. His works were featured in magazines, including St. Nicholas, McCall's, Child Life, Good Housekeeping and Church School. He also sketched over 450 story illustrations for All-Story Love. In 1940, his bestseller “Call it Courage” was published by Macmillan. Between 1942 and 1947, he published “No Brighter Glory” and “Rain Forest.”
Personal Life
He was married to Margaret Mitchell Robertson. The couple had 2 children.
Recognition
In 1941, he received the Newbery Medal for his book “Call It Courage”.
