At the age of 17, he illegally joined the United States Marine Corps and served with the 14th Marine Aircraft Wing. He served at the Marine Corps for five years and left with the rank of sergeant. He then enrolled at USC. During his days at the university, he was made the managing editor for the school’s magazine.
He landed a job as a reporter for the American media company Variety after he moved to Paris. He worked with Variety for a year, and in 1950, he joined the editorial staff at one of the offices of the New York Herald Tribune (European Edition).
Achievements
Buchwald is a multiple award winner. He won the Pulitzer Prize for “Outstanding Commentary” in 1982. Also, he was awarded the World Humor Award, which he received from the Workshop Library on Humor in 1991.
Death
He died as a result of kidney failure.
