About Arthur Freed
Arthur Grossman, famously known as Arthur Freed, was a multiple award-winning Hollywood Lyricist and film producer. He is widely considered an important figure in reshaping the narrative structure and visual styles of the American musical comedy genre.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Freed was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and eventually abandoned his formal education to embark on a full-time music career.
Music & Film Career
He spent the initial years of his music career in Chicago, working as a pianist. He also joined the “Marx Brothers” and wrote lyrics for the groups.
In 1928, the American media firm MGM studios hired him. He subsequently partnered with fellow lyricist Nacio Herb Brown, and they co-wrote numerous film musical standards, including “You Are My Lucky Star” and “Singin’ in the Rain.” In 1938, he worked as an associate producer on “The Wizard of OZ.”
Between 1940 and 1960, he was one of the most famous Hollywood lyricists, producing hit films such as “An American in Paris,” “Meet Me in St. Louis,” and “Gigi.” In these productions, he introduced integrated musicals to the American film industry, which saw characters narrate an event and express their feelings in songs at any time in the production.
Cause of Death
He died of a severe heart attack at age 78 in April 1973.
