About Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was one of the most popular Baroque artists during the 17th Century. His rise to fame began in 1945 when he began painting 11 canvases about the Franciscan saints in Seville. Throughout his career, the Spanish painter completed many paintings with the most popular ones titled “The Holy Family with a Little Bird” and “The Young Beggar”.
Over the years, his works have appeared at some popular art centers including the National Gallery in London, and the Frick Collection in New York City. He was a co-founder of Seville’s Academia de Bellas Artes.
Family
He was the son of the children of María Pérez Murillo and her surgeon husband Gaspar Esteban. The painter had a sister named Ana.
Other Facts
His works influenced a number of artists including Jean-Baptiste Greuze and Thomas Gainsborough.
In 1682, while working for a Cádiz-based church, he fell off a scaffold.
