About Bartolomeo Cristofori
Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco, shortened as Bartolomeo Cristofori, is a critical figure in musical instruments and Italian music history. He was a brilliant Italian musical instrument maker and is famously credited for inventing the Piano.
Background
The inventor was born in the northern Italian city of Padua. The most significant event of his life occurred in 1688, at age 33, when he began working for Prince Ferdinando de Medici. The prince was a music enthusiast and therefore employed him as a technician to maintain and repair his extensive collection of instruments and develop new ones. He had most likely established his reputation as a brilliant harpsichord maker at the time, as he received a huge salary and a furnished residence in Florence.
Piano Invention
He developed the piano in 1709. However, he called it “gravicembalo col piano e forte”, which translates as “harpsichord that plays soft and loud”. The name was related to the piano’s ability to vary sound based on the pressure applied to the keys. He created this effect by replacing the harpsichord’s plucking mechanism with a hammer action that could hit the strings with varying force. His hammer mechanism was so precisely engineered that no other better mechanism was invented in the piano for the next seven decades.
Death
He died a natural death at age 75 on January 27, 1731.
