About Benjamin Constant
A devout defender of freedom in all endeavors, the Franco-Swiss politician and writer was credited as “the most elegant of all defenders of freedom and privacy” by Russian-British philosopher Isaiah Berlin.
Education
He studied at the University of Erlangen and later headed off to the University of Edinburgh.
Personal Life
In 1794, he won the heart of the thriving already married Germaine de Staël after his 1789 marriage to Baroness Wilhemina von Cramm was annulled. He courted Germaine for about 15 years.
Adolphe
He published his class French novel, “Adolphe,” in 1816. The book was believed to be the literal expression of his affair with writer Anna Lindsay.
Politics
In January 1800 in France, he was elected to the Tribunate but soon fell into the bad books of military leader Napoleon Bonaparte for his support of freedom of speech. Subsequently dismissed in 1802, he spent most of his life in France from 1814 and worked as a deputy for approximately a decade. During this period, he advocated for things like the freedom of the press and slave trade abolition.
Legacy
While he was a strong advocate for individual freedom and explained its importance in one’s moral development, he disapproved of egoism and stressed it did not form part of true individual liberation.
